"Everyone should have the right to marry. To make a commitment to love someone forever is a beautiful thing." - Louise Bourgeois
In the New York Times, Holland Cotter writes about the life of Louise Bourgeois upon her death at 98 years of age. Although this article is written to inform the world of her passing, the context is significant and dense with the artists accomplishments and the struggles she endured throughout her life. A must read for the beginner as a great introduction to Louise Bourgeois : A great artist and trail blazer for women and art.
In the article History From Her Perspective, published in Artslant, Georgia Fee reviews the Center Pompidou show titled elles@centrepompidou. This show is from the gallerys permanent collection and features only women artist on all five floors. From early 20th century to Louise Bourgeois piece "Extreme Tension" 2007 the show manifests many different styles. This exhibit seems an unforgettable experience for anyone who was lucky enough to be in Paris and attend.
Louise Bourgeois work seems to come from her pain she endured as a child and later on as a young women. Her relationship with her Father and how her father viewed a womens worth had a great affect on Bourgeois art. The color red and the phallic shape were very prominant in her pieces.
Her work was truly created for her own salvation and was only viewed and coveted later on in her career. Her gestures were large in scope and radical for her time. Louise Bourgeois was a true maverick.
